Recycling computers and monitors is a good start but what about other electronic items? Here at Subtractions, LLC we take the environment seriously and try to recycle everything and anything that comes through our doors:
Reusing or recycling old phones cuts down on the mining of coltan and
copper, both of which are used in the manufacture of cell phones. Coltan
mining in the Congo has affected gorilla populations. Cell phones also
contain heavy metals, including lead and cadmium, flame retardants in wiring
and plastics as well as batteries all of which are potential environmental
hazards.
Our plastic is shredded and chipped and sold to a product manufacturer who uses the "reclaimed" plastic in the production of high-end components. None of the plastic is discarded. The metal from the keyboard (wire and internal mechanics) is also 100% recycled into new metal products.
Subtractions, LLC dismantles all obsolete and inoperable electronics to recycle the metal. Any old, non-functioning computer will be dismantled and the plastic will be recycled (see the note above about keyboards) and the internal metal frame will be shredded and sent to a metal recycling company where it will be fabricated into new metal for new products.
