Our MissionSubtractions, LLC was established because we recognized the importance of recycling and the need to reduce the amount of waste entering our limited landfills. While all computers and monitors have nominal amounts of material that should not be disposed in open landfills, they can be valuable for reuse and for their individual components. To this end Subtractions, LLC shall recycle all computers, monitors and other electronic equipment to the highest level possible; first by reusing as many components of the computer as possible; secondly by refurbishing and remarketing as many components as possible and lastly, by recycling all components, including all peripheries, in a safe and recognized EPA approved method. Our service is available to large and small businesses, federal agencies, local governments, schools and higher educational institutions AND the general public! To see a list of what we recycle, please visit one of our Services pages. SUBTRACTIONS recycles all electronic equipment we receive. We follow all applicable state, federal and EPA regulations for the proper disposal of electronic scrap and we will issue a Certificate of Recycling and/or Certificate of Destruction for all recycled equipment upon request. Subtractions, LLC -- Company ProfileWith a strong background in recycling, Sarah Manning and Scott Wilson established Subtractions, LLC as an electronics recycling company in 1999. Prior to this Subtractions, LLC was involved primarily in the scrap industry and has been in business since 1985. Recognizing that computers were here to stay and proliferate, they embarked on a mission to keep our landfills free of a product that can be recycled or reused. Since the inception of Subtractions, LLC the company has collected and recycled, reused or resold thousands of computers and their components. Why Recycle?Landfills & Nature: With an estimated 250,000,000 computers becoming obsolete within the next five years and potentially destined for local landfills throughout the United States, the result could be astronomically detrimental in terms of the potential affect on our environment. Some studies indicate that up to 80% of the computers and other electronics (including televisions) collected each year for recycling end up being exported to Asia and other foreign countries. Still other computers are finding their way into our local landfills. According to a 2004 EPA report, the "Use of electronic devices (computers, cellular phones, televisions, etc.) has increased dramatically in recent years, and there are significant environmental concerns related to disposing of such waste due to the hazardous chemicals they often contain. The electronic waste stream is growing about three times faster than the municipal waste stream. Two million tons of E-waste are estimated to be generated each year that may contain high volumes of heavy metals, including an estimated 300 million pounds of lead." (U.S.E.P.A. Semi-Annual Report to Congress, November 2004). SUBTRACTIONS, LLC believes that it's important that computers and all other recyclable electronics are not landfilled. With hazardous components such as cadmium, barium, mercury and lead, it's important to recycle computers and monitors and to keep them out of our landfills. The average monitor (CRT) contains approximately 8 pounds of lead in the glass and connections. If not recycled properly the lead could leach into a landfill and ultimately into your water supply. Landfills are not meant to store electronic waste. Security & Safety When it comes to your security and the safety of your information, SUBTRACTIONS respects your concerns. Every computer that we receive is analyzed and every hard drive is sanitized, data erased and reformatted to Department of Defense (DoD) standards. Upon request we can totally destroy and decimate your hard drive through our in-house physical data destruction shredding equipment; eliminating any possibility that your information can be re-created from your hard drive. The hard drive will then be recycled for its metal content. For your peace of mind, if possible, you should erase your hard drive before donating. It Just Makes Cents! Nearly everyone who has ever purchased a computer hates to see it go. However, your obsolete computer becomes 10% less valuable each year it sits idle in your storage area; making it less valuable and even more likely to not be useful to anyone, even if it's donated to a cousin! And if your company is paying for storage space, that old computer is actually negatively affecting your bottom line. It's time to let it go! |
